How to Increase Repeat Purchase Rate for Your Shopify D2C Brand

3 minutes

Learn how Indian D2C brands can lift repeat purchase rate on Shopify with smarter post purchase flows, better replenishment timing and loyalty that customers actually use. Most D2C brands pour their energy into winning the first order and almost none into the second. That gets expensive fast, because the second order is where the profit usually lives.

Why the second order matters more than the first

Every new customer costs you ad spend, creative, a discount and a shipping promise. A repeat customer costs you a WhatsApp message and a product they liked. Take your blended CAC, subtract it from the margin on a first order, and look at what is left. For plenty of brands the answer is close to zero, or below it.

A quick example with made up numbers: say you earn ₹300 in contribution margin on a first order and spent ₹400 to acquire that customer. You are ₹100 down. A second order that needs no extra acquisition spend puts you ₹200 up. Same customer, same product, a completely different business.

Start with your replenishment window

Pick your top three products and work out how long a customer realistically takes to finish one. A 50 ml serum might last six weeks. A pack of protein might last a month. A kurta never runs out, so your repeat play there is a new drop or a matching piece, not a reminder.

That window decides when your message goes out. The best reminder lands a few days before the customer runs out, not a week after. You can find your real window in Shopify by checking the median number of days between first and second order for people who did reorder.

Build a post purchase journey, not a single thank you email

The first 30 days after delivery decide whether someone comes back. A simple structure to start with:

  1. Delivery day: confirm it arrived and show how to use the product properly. Wrong usage is a hidden cause of bad experiences.

  2. Days 3 to 5: ask how it is going. A one tap reply is plenty.

  3. Days 7 to 10: ask for a review once they have actually used it, and invite a photo.

  4. A couple of weeks before the replenishment window ends: send a reorder reminder with a one click link.

  5. At the end of the window: a gentle nudge, with a small incentive only if they still have not reordered.

Spread these across WhatsApp and email. WhatsApp gets seen faster, and email suits the longer how to content. Neither should feel like a blast.

Segment before you send

Sending one message to everyone teaches people to ignore you. Three segments are enough to begin with: first time buyers, repeat buyers, and lapsed customers (no order past your replenishment window plus a buffer). Each needs different copy. First timers want reassurance. Repeat buyers want to feel recognised. Lapsed customers need a reason to return, and that reason can be news instead of a discount.

Make loyalty worth the effort

Points programs fall flat when the reward is too far away or too small to notice. If you build one, let customers earn something meaningful on the second order, not the tenth. Memberships suit brands with frequent purchases: early access, free shipping, a birthday gift. Keep the rules simple enough to explain in one sentence.

Track cohorts, not averages

A single repeat rate hides a lot. Break it down by acquisition month, first product and channel. You will often find that customers from one product or one campaign repeat at double the rate of the rest, and that tells you where your ad budget should go.

Check in at 30, 60 and 90 days. If the 60 day repeat rate climbs cohort over cohort, your system is working. If it stays flat, look at the product experience and the timing before you touch the copy.

What to do this week

Pull the median time to second order for your hero product, set up one reorder reminder timed to it, and compare the repeat rate of the next cohort with the last one. It is small, it is measurable, and it pays back quickly.

If your store keeps winning first orders but the second one never comes, that's the conversation worth having before you spend more on acquisition.
